Sai Institute of Gastroenterology and Liver Sciences is dedicated to providing top-notch care and education on fatty liver disease and its diagnosis through liver elastography.

What is Fatty Liver Disease?
Fatty Liver Disease occurs when there is an accumulation of excess fat in the liver cells. This condition is common and often linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol. It can lead to more serious liver conditions if not managed properly.
Types of Fatty Liver Disease:
  • Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Fat buildup in the liver not caused by alcohol consumption.
  • Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD): Fat accumulation due to heavy alcohol use.
Symptoms of Fatty Liver Disease
  • Often Asymptomatic: Many people with fatty liver disease have no symptoms.
  • Fatigue
  • Discomfort in the Upper Right Abdomen
  • Unexplained Weight Loss
  • Weakness
Causes and Risk Factors
  • Obesity
  • Insulin Resistance or Type 2 Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol or Triglycerides
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Rapid Weight Loss
  • Poor Diet
Diagnosis of Fatty Liver Disease
Comprehensive Evaluation:
  • Medical History and Physical Exam: Assessment of symptoms and risk factors.
  • Blood Tests: To check liver function and identify possible causes of liver damage.
  • Imaging Tests: Ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to visualize liver structure.
  • Liver Elastography (FibroScan): A non-invasive test that measures liver stiffness to assess the degree of liver fibrosis (scarring).
What is Liver Elastography (FibroScan)?
Liver Elastography is a specialized ultrasound technique that measures the stiffness of the liver. Increased stiffness can indicate fibrosis or cirrhosis. This test is quick, painless, and provides immediate results.
